World Bank provides $22m to strengthen Ghana’s food security – Ato Forson
The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that a US$22.6 million World Bank loan under the West Africa Food System Resilience Project (FSRP) will significantly enhance Ghana’s food security and help address longstanding structural challenges in the agricultural sector.
Dr. Forson made the remarks during a working visit on Friday, January 30, 2026, to Golden Exotics Limited, a leading banana production and export company, as well as rice farms in Kpong and Asutsuare in the Eastern and Greater Accra regions.
The World Bank–supported project, being implemented by the Government of Ghana, is designed to improve farmers’ access to accurate weather and climate advisory services through digital platforms. It also aims to increase the production of key commodities such as maize, rice, soybean, tomato and poultry, thereby strengthening productivity and resilience across the national food system.
According to the Finance Minister, the loan facility will play a pivotal role in resolving persistent challenges within the sector.
“I wish to thank the World Bank for this support and for providing the Government of Ghana with this loan facility to develop our agricultural sector. Agriculture has struggled over the years, and this intervention will make a significant difference,” Dr. Forson said.
Also speaking, the World Bank’s Division Director for Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, Mr. Robert Taliercio, said the initiative underscores the Bank’s continued commitment to Ghana’s agricultural development agenda.
He noted that agriculture contributes substantially to Ghana’s GDP and remains one of the country’s largest sources of employment, making it a critical pillar of the economy.
“Agriculture is extremely important to Ghana. Infrastructure challenges persist, but despite these constraints, the World Bank remains firmly committed to supporting Ghana, particularly in addressing key infrastructure gaps,” Mr. Taliercio stated.
