NLC summons four tertiary education unions and employers over ongoing strike
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has summoned four tertiary education unions currently on strike, along with their employers, in a bid to resolve the ongoing industrial action.
The directive, issued under Section 139 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), applies to the Senior Staff Association–Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG).
The Commission has instructed the unions and their employers, or their authorised representatives, to appear before it for a hearing to address the issues that led to the strike.
The move follows a High Court ruling on Friday, February 13, 2026, which ordered the striking workers to immediately suspend their industrial action and restrained them from continuing what the court described as an illegal strike.
All parties are expected to appear before the Commission on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. The NLC confirmed that the necessary notices have been served.
SSA-UoG, FUSSAG and TEWU-TUC began an indefinite strike on Tuesday, February 3, citing unilateral changes by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to previously agreed conditions of service.
The industrial action, which has disrupted activities across several public universities, centres on unpaid Tier Two pension contributions and other outstanding financial obligations to senior staff. The unions are also protesting the replacement of overtime allowances with a “call-in allowance,” arguing that the change breaches a 2021 agreement and undermines staff rights and expectations.
