ECOWAS Provides $250,000 in Relief Support for Ghana’s Flood Victims
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced the arrival of a $250,000 relief donation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to support victims of Ghana’s June floods.
In a Facebook post on Friday, October 16, Mr Ablakwa said the funds, equivalent to approximately GH¢3 million, had been transferred directly to the accounts of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), which will oversee the distribution of the assistance to affected communities.
He explained that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), had selected ADRA as an independent implementing partner to manage the relief package.
According to the minister, the decision was intended to promote transparency and ensure that the assistance reached deserving beneficiaries through an independent process, without government involvement in selecting recipients.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of Ghana’s National Consultative Committee on Regional Integration (NCCRI), a body mandated to oversee ECOWAS regional integration programmes and social interventions in the country.
Mr Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in managing the relief funds, stressing that the distribution process would be guided by integrity.
The ECOWAS donation is expected to provide assistance to individuals and households affected by the June floods as authorities and relief organisations continue efforts to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
The floods, which occurred on June 29, affected more than 38,000 people across the Greater Accra Region, displaced over 7,700 households and claimed at least 15 lives.
The disaster has renewed concerns about Accra’s recurring flooding challenges and intensified calls for improved drainage systems, stronger flood prevention measures and more effective urban planning to protect vulnerable communities from future disasters.
