Speaker orders investigation into public Sector Dismissals after December 7
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has directed the Majority Leader to formally schedule a motion calling for a full parliamentary investigation into the recent terminations of public sector workers.
The Tuesday directive came in the wake of a strong announcement by the Minority Parliamentary Caucus, which pledged to use all parliamentary mechanisms to challenge the government’s action.
The dispute originates from a February 11, 2025 directive by the Chief of Staff, which sought to revoke the appointments of public sector workers hired following the December 7, 2024 general elections.
The Speaker’s order to list the motion is expected to trigger a formal parliamentary process.
However, the move to table the motion is being blocked by the Majority Caucus, which has raised a procedural objection. Their challenge is based on the parliamentary sub judice convention, a rule that limits debate on matters currently before the courts to prevent prejudice or interference with ongoing judicial proceedings.
