Anti-LGBTQ Bill presented before Parliament of Ghana
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025 — widely referred to as the anti-LGBTQ bill has been formally laid before Parliament of Ghana for consideration.
The proposed law seeks to criminalise activities associated with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons. It is being sponsored by 10 Members of Parliament from both the Majority and Minority caucuses, highlighting its bipartisan support.
After the First Reading, the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, referred the bill to the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee for further scrutiny and a report back to the House.
Speaking on the floor on Tuesday, February 17, a lead sponsor, John Ntim Fordjour, called for the swift passage of the legislation. He described it as a bipartisan private member’s bill and urged Parliament and the relevant committees to expedite work on it before the House rises.
According to him, the bill is not new, as it has already gone through extensive consultations and legal reviews, including scrutiny at the Supreme Court, which he said found no part of it to be inconsistent with the Constitution.
