Ghana Gas Engages Media on Safety, Environmental Protection and Sustainable Operations
The Ghana National Gas Company Limited (Ghana Gas) has engaged media practitioners from the Western and Greater Accra regions to brief them on its operations, environmental protection measures and efforts to ensure the safety of communities around its facilities.
The engagement, organised by the company’s Corporate Affairs and Community Relations Office, took place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.
The meeting provided an opportunity for journalists to gain a better understanding of how Ghana Gas manages its operations, monitors emissions, restores vegetation and works to minimise the environmental impact of its activities.
Speaking at the event, the Principal Manager for Health, Safety and Environment, Jaasu Yahaya, outlined some of the measures the company has put in place to protect the environment and safeguard communities within its operational areas.
He explained that Ghana Gas had developed emergency preparedness plans for communities within its operational zones, including evacuation plans and designated routes to guide residents to safety in the event of an emergency.
According to him, the company also works closely with its Community Relations and Security teams to monitor activities along pipeline corridors and maintain regular engagement with communities affected by its projects.
Mr. Yahaya added that Ghana Gas conducts health-related engagements in communities near its facilities to identify potential health concerns and assess factors that could affect the well-being of residents.
Ghana Gas Steps Up Tree Planting and Restoration Efforts
On environmental protection, Mr. Yahaya highlighted the company’s tree-planting and vegetation restoration programmes, which are aimed at improving environmental conditions and supporting long-term sustainability.
He disclosed that Ghana Gas had planted approximately 914,000 trees during previous phases of its restoration programme, with about 75 per cent of them surviving.
He noted that the survival rate of trees planted during the current reporting period had improved to approximately 95 per cent, an indication of better results from the company’s restoration efforts.
He said the company was also extending its vegetation restoration activities around its facilities and operational boundaries to identify areas that require additional attention.
These efforts, he explained, form part of Ghana Gas’s commitment to responsible environmental management and reducing the impact of its operations on surrounding communities.
Company Strengthens Emissions Monitoring
Mr. Yahaya further revealed that Ghana Gas was improving its emissions-monitoring systems to strengthen its ability to detect and manage gas releases from its operations.
He explained that the company was enhancing its material-balance monitoring system to obtain a clearer picture of the volume and movement of gas through its facilities.
The company is also exploring the installation of additional sensors at strategic locations within its plant to help detect possible leaks and enable a quicker response to emissions-related incidents.
According to him, these measures would improve the company’s ability to identify gas releases early, respond promptly to potential leaks and strengthen its overall environmental performance.
He also disclosed that relevant operational and management teams were working together to explore ways of commercialising components of gas currently being flared.
The initiative, he said, is expected to help reduce gas flaring and its associated environmental effects while ensuring that more of the available gas resources are put to productive use.
Mr. Yahaya stressed that the various interventions reflect the company’s efforts to improve operational efficiency while reducing the environmental footprint of its activities.
Ghana Gas Calls for Stronger Media Collaboration
The Head of Corporate Communications at Ghana Gas, Richard Ernest Kirk-Mensah, expressed satisfaction with the engagement, describing it as an important step towards strengthening the relationship between the company and the media.
He said regular interactions with journalists would help improve their understanding of the company’s operations and ongoing initiatives, enabling them to report more accurately and comprehensively on its activities.
Mr. Kirk-Mensah emphasised that providing media practitioners with reliable and relevant information was essential to promoting informed public discussions about the company’s operations and its role in Ghana’s energy sector.
The engagement forms part of Ghana Gas’s broader stakeholder relations efforts to promote transparency, improve public understanding of its activities and strengthen communication with key stakeholders.
Through continued engagement with the media, the company hopes to ensure that the public receives accurate information about its operations, environmental protection initiatives and community safety measures, as well as its contribution to Ghana’s energy security and sustainable development.
