Airport Infrastructure Levy to finance new Wa Airport – Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that construction of a new airport in Wa, the Upper West Regional Capital, will soon begin following Parliament’s approval of the Airport Infrastructure Levy Bill.
The President explained that the newly introduced levy—applied to domestic flights as well as international, African, and ECOWAS regional travel—will be channelled into a dedicated fund to finance airport infrastructure development nationwide.
“Now that money is going to go into a fund, and that fund will be used to develop airports across the country,” President Mahama said at the launch of the SheaPark Resource Hub Project in Wa.
He noted that the Upper West Region will be a direct beneficiary of the initiative, announcing that the fund will support the construction of an entirely new airport in Wa to replace the existing facility.
“I’m pleased to announce that Wa will benefit from this fund with the construction of a new airport—not the old airport,” he stated.
President Mahama said the current airport site presents significant limitations and is no longer suitable for expansion or modern aviation requirements.
“As you can see, the road was diverted around the runway. As a result, the Airports Company has settled on a site that was allocated several years ago,” he explained.
He further disclosed that officials from the Ghana Airports Company Limited have already visited Wa to inspect the proposed site in preparation for construction.
The new airport is expected to improve air connectivity to the Upper West Region, boost regional economic activity, and enhance access to Wa as part of the government’s broader national infrastructure development agenda.
