Police intercept truck carrying 3,000 slabs of suspected cannabis; reject GH¢150,000 bribe
The Ghana Police Service has intercepted a tipper truck carrying more than 3,000 slabs of plant material believed to be narcotic drugs during an intelligence-led operation in the Greater Accra Region.
A statement issued by the Tema Regional Police Command said the operation was conducted in the early hours of February 15, 2026. At about 12:10 a.m., personnel from the Regional Patrols Unit stopped a Sinotruk tipper truck with registration number GN 993-14 at Sege Akpla Manya.
The vehicle, which was reportedly conveying sacks of fertiliser, was found to be loaded with 3,009 slabs of plant material suspected to be cannabis. The driver reportedly abandoned the truck and fled on seeing the police.
The truck and the suspected narcotics have been impounded at the Tema Regional Police Headquarters to aid investigations, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the driver and trace the owner of the vehicle.
In a related development, the police on February 16 at about 7:10 p.m. arrested two men — Victor Asigbey, 40, and Peter Asigbey, 35 — for allegedly attempting to bribe officers at the Regional Criminal Investigations Department in Tema.
The suspects are said to have offered GH¢150,000 in cash to influence the release of the vehicle and the impounded substances. The money has been retrieved and kept as an exhibit.
Both men are currently in custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be put before the court.
The Tema Regional Police Command reaffirmed its resolve to clamp down on narcotics-related crimes and maintain professionalism in the discharge of its duties.
