Cocoa Farmers Threaten Nationwide Protest Over Unpaid COCOBOD Arrears
Cocoa farmers across the country have threatened to embark on a nationwide demonstration next week over unpaid monies owed by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) for cocoa beans supplied since November 2025.
According to the farmers, prolonged delays in payment—spanning several weeks—have pushed many into severe financial distress, leaving them unable to meet basic needs such as healthcare expenses and school fees.
The President of the Mankrong Cocoa Cooperative Farmers Association, Francis Teinor, in an interview, , called on COCOBOD and relevant government authorities to urgently settle the outstanding arrears to prevent potential disruptions within the cocoa sector.
He explained that the situation has become dire for many farmers, some of whom are unable to seek medical care due to lack of funds. With schools reopening, he noted, parents are also struggling to pay their children’s fees.
Mr. Teinor further emphasized that farmers cannot continue to hold on to their cocoa beans because they lack adequate storage facilities.
“As I speak, it has been about six weeks and farmers have not received payment for their cocoa. This is seriously affecting the sector. If the COCOBOD CEO fails to take action, he should expect serious repercussions from next week. Farmers are unhappy, and if care is not taken, we will take to the streets,” he warned.
