GH¢2bn in arrears crippling GWL operations — MD
Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has disclosed that customer arrears amounting to about GH¢2 billion are severely constraining the company’s cash flow, limiting its capacity to expand services and upgrade critical infrastructure.
The company revealed that although it produces approximately 220 million gallons of water nationwide each day, only 106 million gallons are accounted for, leaving about 114 million gallons unaccounted for.
In the Accra Region, weekly water demand is estimated at 210 million gallons, yet a deficit of 73 million gallons remains. GWL attributed the shortfall largely to customer arrears and losses from unaccounted-for water.
Speaking at the inauguration of Revenue Enhancement Teams on Wednesday, February 4—an initiative aimed at strengthening revenue mobilization and improving service delivery—Managing Director Adam Mutawakilu said the losses are driven by both technical and commercial challenges.
“Our assessment over the period indicates that about 32 per cent of the non-revenue water is due to technical losses arising from aged pipes, as well as transmission and distribution lines,” he said.
He added that a significant proportion of the losses results from illegal connections, meter bypassing, billing anomalies and outright water theft.
